Architecture for Outer Space 2023 Edition

Moon Research Lab

Moon Research Lab

The workshop will be conducted in collaboration with the European Space Agency's Topical Team on Planetary Caves. Its goal will be to investigate the possibilities of developing analysis and research modules within lunar pits. A result of the collapse of portions of lava tubes underlying the lunar surface, such holes provide access to a vast system of tunnels and galleries that reasonably are the safest context in which to place the first human garrisons in the extraterrestrial environment. In the tunnels of our satellite, the human settlement would be sheltered from the extreme temperature ranges of the surface and from the lethal radiation that – due to the absence of atmosphere - periodically invests the Moon. Here, the first human bases will be able to grow and develop as the foundation of future colonies. Through the workshop, students will have the opportunity not only to grapple with an exciting and visionary topic - constantly monitored by experts in the field - but also to contribute to the theoretical solution of challenges that design in the extraterrestrial sphere will necessarily face.
