Brief
Bricks are among the oldest and most evocative building materials: durable, natural and endowed with an enveloping, human-friendly materiality, brick has been used to build some of the greatest architecture masterpieces in the history of mankind. Nowadays, we can no longer procrastinate on environmental issues, but at the same time we must not give up on the freedom and dignity of architectural thinking, and bricks are one of the most effective technical and creative answers to the problems of contemporary building, as they are capable of generating beauty at minimum environmental cost.
It is for this reason that the course in ‘’Earth Architecture‘’ was created, the training project of wienerberger aimed at training architectural professionals in the field of sustainable design in brick, to continue in the research around a material loved by the most prominent interpreters of architecture and capable of providing creative answers to the demand for valuable architectural artefacts with a lower carbon footprint.
Through a careful study of the environmental implications of constructions and by combining the knowledge of earth characteristics with the most modern architectural design languages, designers will have the possibility of generating refined architecture that is highly contemporary yet durable and environmentally compatible, unlike any other technology.

Design of a Paediatric Hospice
Design workshop
Benedetta Tagliabue & Simone Contini / EMBT Miralles Tagliabue
The workshop will provide a practical opportunity to apply and test all the knowledge acquired through the other teaching modules, offering participants the chance to engage with a real-life redevelopment and extension project. Led by Benedetta Tagliabue, the workshop will focus on the transformation of the current hospital in Assisi into a paediatric hospice, with the ambition of establishing itself as a leading international centre of its kind.
The transition from life to death is perhaps the most profound and dramatic unresolved issue facing humanity. Human beings reject the concept of death, as it runs counter to every basic instinct and form of self-awareness. Yet, the end of life is part of the human experience, and when this occurs in the context of an illness or a clinical condition with a predictable course, the patient deserves the best care and attention necessary to be supported through the most complex and delicate transition of their life.
The project for a paediatric hospice, to be established within the grounds of the existing hospital in Assisi, will therefore be a project of great social significance – aimed at providing support and comfort to patients during the final stages of their lives – but also one of profound meaning, as it addresses the ultimate mystery of human nature: our own transience.
Architecture, after all, has always served transcendent and mysterious purposes – from religious buildings to funerary structures – and the ability of a design to influence people’s well-being – in any situation or context – makes architects just as essential as doctors in upholding the principles of quality of life and human dignity.
The design challenge will be realised through a technical approach that makes use of terracotta: this will comply with the required health and safety standards and be consistent with the architectural style of the hospital for which the extension is being planned.
Construction workshop
Construction is a fundamental step in architecture. For this reason, YACademy offers its students the opportunity to participate in the process of producing their own ideas. Thus, the students will gain practical experience on construction sites and, above all, the authorship of projects built for excellent commissions, destined for a major media echo and capable of defining a turning point in their professional career.
Placement
At the end of teaching modules and workshop, YACademy’s Placement office will guarantee every student an internship or collaboration proposal in one of our partner studios.
