The Yacademy podcast experience: talking face to face about professional and personal experiences
By Federica Pellis and Giuliana Sabelli
A unique approach
As we entered the Yacademy community, the podcast project immediately caught our attention. Voices beyond architecture ﹣ born out of the initiative of previous courses’ students ﹣ represented a wonderful opportunity to talk face to face with personalities who invested their career in the architectural world with passion.
It gave space to all the questions regarding the hosts’ personal careers that came to our minds while listening to their lectures. Approaching professionals and talking with them about their experiences is an opportunity that doesn’t come so often in a young architect’s life. Thus, we embraced this opportunity with active interest, considering a chance to connect with them in a less structured or academic path, enabling us to have more personal conversations during the podcast.
Inspiration from each episode
Our curiosity developed around the hosts' personal experiences. The interest was born out of the questions which every young architect asks themselves at the beginning of their careers, and looking at the lecturers' work, a genuine inspiration and interest in their own path came out. The experience of professionals represented here a fundamental source of motivation in order to answer these questions.
Therefore, understanding their path, how it began, how their passions made an important growth in their career, how they faced challenges, how things fell into place, and finally, the future perspective were the main themes of our conversations with the hosts. The wonderful ideas which came out while recording the episodes were inspiring for both of us: they gave a deeper understanding of how personal experiences shape the person we are in the present, and helped to give even a vague prediction on how the future of architecture will work.
To achieve one’s career with passion and curiosity
Listening to their voices has been a way to understand more about all their experiences and how they influenced their paths. Each host was passionate about their work in diverse architectural fields﹣be it in landscape, exhibition, or even engineering areas - and not only believed in their principles, but they also pursued them from childhood or young adulthood. Their passion and commitment have brought them to their own stage of life and career, facing both success and challenge, which, however, sometimes may have added positive appeal to their work. At the end of each episode, both of us found ourselves full of inspiration and new points of view to appreciate and consider thinking about the contemporary world of architecture.
