Concept Design for Architecture

Brief

Everything comes from an idea.

Good architecture is always the product of a good design idea.

But how do you get good ideas? Is there a method to come up with good design ideas?

The answer is yes, and it is for this reason that the course in ‘Concept Design for Architecture’ was created: to train designers in the creative process, to structure in an original and coherent way what are the very foundations of architectural thinking.

The course aims to offer the tools to develop innovative ideas for the composition of extraordinary architecture, at any scale, for any purpose, and in any context.

Through the experimentation of methodologies and processes of concept design and by analysing the connection between art and architecture, designers will acquire the competence to translate design needs into successful architectural concepts, which can have a great impact at a social level as well as on the media. The course consists of 84 hours of frontal teaching, 32 hours of workshops and numerous contributions from renowned professionals.

At the end of the training course, Yacademy placement office will guarantee each student an internship/collaboration proposal within the partner firms.

Design workshop

Giulio Rigoni, Liam Young / BIG Bjarke Ingels Group

The workshop will provide an opportunity for practical synthesis through which to test all the knowledge acquired across the other educational modules, offering participants the chance to engage with one of the most complex and radical scenarios of the near future: the coexistence of cities and nuclear infrastructure. Led by Liam Young, filmmaker and visionary of speculative architecture, together with Giulio Rigoni of BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, the workshop will investigate the role of architecture in redefining the collective imagination surrounding nuclear energy—a technology that, according to the vast majority of international scientific agencies, will inevitably be part of the post-fossil energy transition.

The central theme of the workshop will be the exploration of the relationship between human settlement and nuclear presence: no longer an infrastructure relegated to the margins, but an integrated component of the city of the future. Participants will be asked to question how to live alongside power plants, storage sites, and radioactive materials, imagining scenarios in which urban and architectural design respond to needs of safety, symbolism, and coexistence. Building on the reflections introduced by Young, the workshop will address an unprecedented temporal challenge: designing an architecture capable of speaking to future civilizations through non-verbal, architectural, and territorial languages.

Within this perspective, design becomes an exercise in architecture’s ability to engage with geological time, to shape new urban rituals around energy, and to construct shared narratives in a world in which nuclear power is no longer an emergency or a taboo, but a structural condition of inhabitation. Between dystopian scenarios, critical speculations, and future imaginaries, participants will be called upon to develop visions of resilient cities capable of metabolizing risk, technology, and deep time through design—transforming uncertainty into creative matter and concept design into a tool for cultural anticipation.

Construction workshop

Construction is a fundamental step in architecture. For this reason, YACademy offers its students the opportunity to participate in the process of producing their own ideas. Thus, the students will gain practical experience on construction sites and, above all, the authorship of projects built for excellent commissions, destined for a major media echo and capable of defining a turning point in their professional career.

Placement

At the end of teaching modules and workshop, YACademy’s Placement office will guarantee every student an internship or collaboration proposal in one of our partner studios.

Admission

Requirements

Students or graduates in Architecture/Design can apply to the course. The commission, based on the assessment of the application, may admit students with different qualifications.

Registration

To apply, it is necessary to register online and submit a Curriculum Vitae, a Portfolio, and a Motivational Letter. Moreover, it is necessary to pay the administration fee (60€ + VAT). The best 20 candidates will be admitted to the course according to the rules.
The administration fee payment does not bind the student to purchase the course.

Scholarship

Therefore, it is not necessary to make specific actions to apply for a scholarship. The scholarship covers the entire enrollment fee - regardless of the type of attendance chosen -, but does not cover the administration fee (73,20€) that has to be paid in order to complete the application process successfully.

Timeline

Complying with deadlines is a fundamental requirement to take part in the course. All students are encouraged to pay the utmost attention to the timeline and to complete each phase in advance.
